Despite its name, allspice is actually a single spice: the dried, unripe berries of the chili pepper, which is native to Central America and the Caribbean, and now cultivated in other tropical regions. It got its name probably thanks to the fact that it combines the flavors of several individual spices - cinnamon, nutmeg and cloves.
